Mary Genevieve O'Brien was born in Christian Prairie, Iowa on December 28, 1887 to parents James Francis O'Brien and Maria Canty. Her family moved to Howard County, Iowa and lived there until 1910. After her father died the family moved to South Dakota, settling west of Armour. This is where she met and married a man named Francis Paul Walsh. They were married at St. George's Catholic Church in Armour and lived with his brother Ed's family while their house was being built. Together, Mary and Francis had only two children, a girl named Agatha Marguerite and a baby girl who died at birth in 1923.
