Maria Canty was born in London, England on Jan 25, 1856 to parents Jeremiah Canty and Hannah Stanton. Jeremiah originally immigrated to England from Ireland where he met and married Hannah. Sometime between June 1857 and February 1858, Jeremiah and Hannah took their children, including Maria and moved to America where they settled in Detroit, Michigan. In 1860 Maria moved to Lodi, Wisconsin with her family and then settled in Lawler, Iowa where she met and married a man named James O'Brien. Together, Maria and James had six children, three boys named Thomas, Edward, and William and three girls named Mary, Ellen, and Maggie. Their daughters, Mary and Ellen married two men from the Walsh family, Francis and William, respectively.
