        Edward John Canty was born in Lodi, Wisconsin in 1860 to parents Jeremiah Canty and Hannah Stanton. Since both Edward and his sister Eleanor were born in the same year it is possible, but not verified, that they may be twins. Jeremiah originally immigrated to England from Ireland where he met and married Hannah. Sometime between June 1857 and February 1858 Jeremiah and Hannah moved to America where they settled in Detroit, Michigan. In 1860 Edward moved to Lodi, Wisconsin with his family and then settled in Lawler, Iowa. It is here where he met and married a woman named Nellie Ralph. Together, Edward and Nellie had seven children, five boys named Edward, Ralph, Francis, Carl, and Jerry and two girls named Irene and Nellie.
