Catherine Canty was born in Detroit, Michigan on February 12, 1858 to parents Jeremiah Canty and Hannah Stanton. Jeremiah originally immigrated to England from Ireland where he met and married Hannah. Sometime between June 1857 and February 1858 Jeremiah and Hannah took their children, including Catherine and moved to America where they settled in Detroit, Michigan. In 1860 Catherine moved to Lodi, Wisconsin with her family and then settled in Lawler, Iowa. It is believed here is where she met and married a man named John Hand. Together, Catherine and John had six children, three boys named Joseph, Eugene, and Levi and three girls named Mame, Ella, and Emma.
